What’s involved in Making your own Gin

With a touch of History, Home Economics and Double Chemistry, our professor will get you stuck in to smelling, rubbing and designing your own wonderful tipple.

Making a gin is much like designing a perfume. Our expert host will help you choose out of our 24 botanical’s. To build complexity and depth you need layers of flavours with tops notes, heart notes and base notes. The Botanical’s range from Classic, Citrus, Floral, Aromatic and Herbaceous.

You can really go to town on choosing the ingredients to make your gin perfect by smelling them and thinking about how they might sit in the balance.

Time to start Distilling your own Gin

After carefully weighing out each of your chosen botanicals, the gin making begins. It’s time to pop them in the stills containing the neat alcohol base and eagerly await the process of conversion of a liquid into vapour that is subsequently condensed back to liquid form. It is exemplified at its simplest when steam from a kettle becomes deposited as drops of distilled water on a cold surface.

Distillation is used to separate two or more liquids having different boiling points, in this case we are looking at the separation between alcohol and water. Slowly the gin will start to gentle flow out of the distillation pipe at 80% proof for you to mix with reverse osmosis water to reach 40% proof before bottling.

Gin Making Experience concludes
After all that hands-on fun, on your personalised label you’ll proudly declare the distillers name on your bottles and your dreamed up jazzy name for your two 50cl bottles to delight (or brag about) at home.
